October 21st

Readings: The Odyssey books 9-14

Paper: This will be a continuation of your Plato paper from last week. As with last time, we will do a paper exchange (see partner assignment below). Be sure to use some of the points from in class discussion to refine and modify your analysis.

Madeleine Sides with Logan Mack
Durin Kim with Abigail Munsell
Konrad Losiak with Prem Bala

Postings:

1. In light of our discussions on the cardinal virtues (justice, prudence, temperance, fortitude), I would like you to find two textual examples of each and provide an explanation how said example is exemplifies said virtue. In the event you find an example of multiple virtues appearing at once, you may do this as well.

2. After our discussion on Aristotle's Rhetoric, please choose one speech from what we've read thus far, and analyze it (using specific citations of the text) according to the following categories: speaker, message, audience, context, and purpose. In addition, consider what techniques are being used logos (logical argumentation), pathos (emotional argumentation), ethos (personal reputation argumentation). You should have a paragraph considering each of these facets. Please, don't stop at your first insight on whatever you may be considering. Push your thought process!  NOTE: this method of analysis will be essential for you on the AP exam. One of the three essay prompts this exact sort of analysis. With practice, it will become second nature to you and I expect you all to be able to ace this part of the exam in May.

October 28th

Readings: The Odyssey 15-22

Paper: Final draft of Plato paper due.

Past Exam: I would like you to consider the following essay prompts from last years exam:  http://media.collegeboard.com/digitalServices/pdf/ap/ap14_frq_english_language.pdf

You may note these posting assignments are the exact same as last week. This is not a mistake. You know what they say about practice.
