February Assignments
February 3rd
Vocabulary and Rhetorical Terms
And so it begins. In the google drive Assignment Resources folder you will find a folder entitled "Vocabulary and Rhetorical Terms". Over the course of the next three weeks you will master these.
February 10th you will turn in the first quiz (I will post quiz on Feburary 3rd). It will be on the vocabulary A-G.
February 17th you will turn in the second quiz. It will be on the vocabulary H-P.
February 24th you will turn in the final quiz. It will be on vocabulary Q-Z.
In addition, you will have some related homework to post each week in the Weekly Discussion forum under the subheading "Vocabulary and Rhetorical Terms". This homework is designed to help you practice using words and properly identifying different rhetorical terms.
Your assignment for each set of words (February 3rd, A-G; February 10th, H-P; February 17th Q-Z. You will note the homework is due the week before the quiz so you have practice) is as follows:
1) For the vocabulary words you need to construct three sentences using each word (try to come up with at least one absurd sentence that properly uses the word. I find that absurdity helps usage and definition stick in the brain a bit).
2) For the rhetorical terms you need to find three examples of each (I have no problems with you using the power of google here to find examples and in fact encourage it to help clarify the terms in definition and usage) and then write two of your own examples (this can be a bit tricky at times).
3) Construct a paragraph on any topic you wish using six of the vocabulary words and two of the literary techniques. I recommend you use this as an opportunity to practice those concepts that you find most tricky.

Readings
Jonathan Edwards "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God"
http://digitalcommons.unl.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1053&context=etas
(This is a rhetorically powerful piece and Edwards knows how to craft words and imagery to maximum effect. Pay attention to this. That said, I'll show my hand, I find this piece somewhat abusive.)
George Washington's "Farewell Address"
http://avalon.law.yale.edu/18th_century/washing.asp
Benjamin Banneker's "Letter to Jefferson"
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aia/part2/2h71t.html
Thomas Jefferson's "Letter to Banneker"
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aia/part2/2h72t.html
Paper
Assigned January 20th and due February 3rd. I'm going to give you an extra week.

Recall how I discussed romanticism as a response to the rationalism of the Enlightenment? The goal of the romantics (and this is a major simplification) was to put an emphasis on both head and heart and the mysterious interplay not only between the emotions and the head, but also that mysterious thing called insight that leads to genius and thus the creation of new and better works of art. That's what they felt (ha!) and you can see it seeping through the works of Emerson. There is a darker side to this exploration of the soul through divine insight: there is also the fear of the diabolical, the freakish, the broken, and the weird in the mind. This is where romanticism goes dark, and goes into the Gothic literature of the night. Last year I had the students read Wuthering Heights, but I will spare you this year and throw a little Poe your way. This is one of his short stories.
Edgar Alan Poe: "Ligeia": http://pinkmonkey.com/dl/library1/ligeia.pdf
One thing both enlightenment rationalists and romantic idealists agreed about was the invioliability of a person's right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This does not mean they believed all men were equal in skill or even mental ability (indeed, racist assumptions and tendency were not uncommon), but it does mean they thought man deserved the fruit of his labor. Below is a famous and original look into the life of a slave by the ex-slave Frederick Douglass. I'm not having you read the whole thing, but pay note not only to how Douglass tells his story and the details of that story, but also the introduction material written by his contemporary abolitionists.

Re: February Assignments
So, for the paper - it's due February 3rd or February 10th? Because February 3rd, I'm pretty sure, was the original due date?

Re: February Assignments
What about, like Logan said, the paper swap? (I mean, there are 5 of us, so idk how this is going to work . . .)
Also, for the vocab sentences, do you want us just to use the 'AP English Language and Composition Vocabulary List' or use the Glossary too? Some of them aren't really vocabulary words, more like a random mix of words and phrases and idioms . . .

Re: February Assignments
The glossary you should use to supplement the other (primary) list to create a master list.

Re: February Assignments
I can't find the subheading 'Vocabulary and Rhetorical Terms' in the Weekly Discussions forum. Should we each post our own?

I have it in my drive as well, but he graded mine.
Mr. Peterson, shall we do this paper again or do question number three from this same link.

Re: February Assignments
Another question/comment: On the readings, you have assigned to us Thoreau's On Civil Disobedience, or that's kind of what it looks like. But the link you gave us isn't actually Thoreau's On Civil Disobedience, it's a commentary on that paper. I've already read it and everything . . . and I don't like Thoreau . . . but I guess maybe that wasn't actually the link you intended to post? =/
